Matters of Money

Creating a budget and controlling spending are two strategies that will enable you to achieve financial peace of mind. Step One is to know where the money is! Track your income and your expenses, no matter how small, for one month. Use the information to create a budget, with the following categories: Income—salary after taxes, other income; and Expenses—home, personal, food, transportation, medical, savings, entertainment, gifts/contributions.

Reviewing your budget every month will give you some peace of mind (particularly if you are under budget!) and enable you to identify areas where you can control spending. Encourage your saving habit by starting small—save your change and deposit in the bank; clip coupons; use a public transit pass; or, watch for sales, etc.
